Master of Arts in Earth Sciences

The Master of Arts in Earth Science is a non-thesis program that permits students to design programs of study in consultation with the program advisor that are compatible with the individual's goals. The program is intentionally flexible; coursework may be drawn from geosciences, biological sciences, chemistry, anthropology, economics, political science, communication, and physics, among others.

Admission Requirements

Grade-point average of at least 3.0 (of 4.0) for previous two years of undergraduate work is strongly recommended and is required for full consideration for financial support via teaching assistantships. However, teaching assistantships will be awarded preferentially to students enrolled in the MS Geology program.
Students must have successfully completed GEOS 130, 131, 301 or 335, and a field experience such as 438 or 439, or their equivalent, or must complete these courses prior to finishing the degree.

Program Requirements

Complete a minimum of thirty-five (35) hours of graduate coursework, with at least 18 hours at the 600-level or above.
A core of eighteen (18) hours of coursework in Geosciences is required.
May include satisfactory completion of up to four (4) hours of GEOS 710 (Independent Research) or up to three (3) hours of GEOS 712 (Field Experience), or both.
Students are strongly encouraged to attend weekly departmental seminars. Enrollment for credit in GEOS 660 for one semester is encouraged, but not required.
